Gem Theatre

The Gem Theatre was originally built in 1927, but it wasn’t named the Gem until 1967 when it became a movie theatre for adult films. It would close in 1978, but then finally bought again and fully stored and was opened again in 1991. The Gem Theatre and the Century Building attached to it would get moved from its original located in order to preserve it when the new ball park for the Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park was being built. They moved it five blocks over to its new location on Madison Ave in October of 1997 and it was one of the largest relocation of a building of that statute in the nation. Recently, late night house Jimmy Kimmel even took over the Gem Theatre to do a weeks worth of shows. The Gem Theatre is much like its name, a gem of Detroits fine history.
